Seven Awesome Kitchen Gadgets

Everyone who cooks can use some of these practical, time saving kitchen tools. While you can get by with a bare bones kitchen and a few old pots and pans, a lot of dishes are harder to make or more time consuming to prepare. The items in this list can free up some of your time, help you make delicious meals, store leftovers and even make the kitchen a fun place. So without further ado, here are some of my favorite kitchen gadgets. I hope you like them.

Imagine getting up in the morning to the smell of freshly baked bread, ready for you to take out of the machine and slice up for toast or for lunch sandwiches. And all you had to do was load the ingredients the night before, then set the timer.

2. Automatic Coffee Maker

This goes well with the bread maker. Add coffee grounds and water, set the clock and have coffee waiting for you when you stumble out of bed in the morning. Rise and shine!

3. High Quality Knife Set

I used to make do with an old set of mismatched knives given to me without a knife block. Some of the handles were loose, and they had to be stored in a drawer. The new set sits on the counter top. The edges stay sharp longer, and the set contains knives for most needs. More room in the drawer, too.

4. Plastic Food Containers

With a set of containers for food storage, saving leftovers is much easier. Many have lids with vents, for use in microwaves. Another way to use them is to freeze food for future use. They look better than old margarine and yogurt containers, too.

These hand-held gadgets can be placed in large drinking glasses, pots, or mixing bowls. You can mix drinks, baking ingredients, gravies or even whip potatoes. They take up less space and are easier to clean than traditional blenders as well.

A toaster oven can cook toasted items with toppings, like garlic bread and mini pizzas, as well as make toast. Small baking projects are possible too, if you don’t want to or can’t use a larger oven.

For grilled cheese, tuna melts and patty melts, these grills seal the edge of the sandwich so cheese and other things can’t leak out.

These are some of the kitchen gadgets I like to use myself. For the larger items, maybe you can borrow one to test drive it before you buy. That is what I did with the bread maker. Our food containers, coffee maker and hand blender see daily use, and the toaster oven and sandwich grill once or twice a week. All in all, a good investment for my family. Happy cooking!

Sharpen a Kitchen Knife

The knife is a very important tool and essential part of our basic food necessities. Even in cultures where utensils such as spoons and forks are not generally used, knives are used to cut, slice, and dice food. This includes Muslim culture, in which eating with the right hand is preferred, and in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese culture, where chopsticks are common.

All knives though face a common problem; their steel edges will become dull over time. Knives become dull due to frequent use, oxidation, and improper cutting surfaces. There are many options available to make a knives sharp edge last, and also to sharpen a dull edge. Dull edged knives are more dangerous, they can slip from the food surface during cutting and injure your hand.

Several manufacturers offer complete knive sets which include multiple knives, a cutting block, and sharpening steel along with complete guidelines on how to maintain and sharpen knives. If you do find that you have a dull knife, a sharpening steel can be used to make a fresh, sharp edge. People can be intimidated with a sharpening steel, or a sharpening block, but there is nothing too complicated. If you have dull knives, take a minute, sharpen the knife, and literally in less than one minute, your cutting experience will be completely different. You will be glad that you took the time to sharpen your knife and use the sharpening steel.

I faced this experience myself the first time I used the sharpening steel. “Do I really want to try this – what if I mess up the knife?”, I thought. I was glad I did it, and the beef that I was cutting was twice as easy with the new blade.

A sharpening steel is actually a metal rod that you need to hold in one hand. Pick up the knife with other hand. Second put on the steel rod handle over the knife steel. At third step, hold on the steel on the knife handle at 25 degree angle and draw across the blade. Repeat this process several times until you get your desired sharp edge.

If you want to use stone to sharpen the steel, you can use any type of stone whether wet or dry but place it on flat and stable surface; you can use your kitchen counter for this purpose. Similarly sharpening steel you will use knife steel over stone at 25 degree angle. Draw your knife on the stone toward you and against your direction repetitively.

Homemade sharpeners are helpful because you can use anytime at home. Some knives require professional sharpening, for example, sending to the manufacturer. If your knife instructions specify this requirement, obviously you should follow these directions.

The purpose in sharing the contents found within the article would be to help you get hold of the ultimate superior quality kitchen knife at a very reasonable price. I adhere to one personal and special theory that many people don’t usually think of when they’re ready to buy their knives. what I believe is rather than buying that seventeen piece set that promises you would need every one, I’d prefer to buy a minimum number of quality knives which will definitely ensure 99% completion of any knife related tasks. your cooking style wouldn’t dictate the kind of knife you’d be getting, but always stick to anything basic when you are buying knives. the two most useful knives would be: a serrated & a chef’s knife. A chef’s knife holds a characteristic of having a very straight and very sharp-edge feature, usually measuring approximately eight to ten inches in its span. This type of knife is definitely useful in approximately 80% of knife related duties. Serrated knives should include features like: long, sharp and jagged edges which will allow the knife to cut through soft and tender objects such as tomatoes and bread. the two mentioned knives cover approximately ninety five percent of any kitchen duties. I may opt not to use other knives because the 2 ones would already be sufficient. Although there are certain instances that it is important to get specialized knives to perform certain tasks that both these knives wouldn’t be performing accurately. Some examples would include a paring knife/kitchen scissors. But then again the 2 basic knives would still be better in performing any special tasks. If buying any of the 2 basic knives we have been mentioning be keen in checking those forged-blade knives rather than those stamped-blade ones. Telling them apart is easy; their difference lies in their handles, a forged-blade’s knife’s hand-molded. , while the stamped-blade knife was pressed using some machine. the forged-blade knife naturally comes superior compared to that of a stamped-blade knife. Its huge advantage would be their durability. when using a stamped-blade knife especially when its blades are loose, you might cut yourself accidentally. while using a forged-blade knife together with appropriate care and maintenance, will last one lifetime & by far safer to use. by now you have understood the qualities to check for when you buy a forged-blade knife, other contributing factors in searching for the ultimate best knife includes the dimensions of the knife. as a ‘rule of thumb’ whenever choosing the knife’s size. Check the length of the cutting or chopping board that you’d use often, and then measure the board diagonally. Purchase knives which are approximately equal or perhaps one to about two inches less than the total size of your cutting or chopping board. always think that during buying knives, this kitchen equipment is truly a huge investment. Imagine the convenience it would bring the user. together with quality and appropriate care and maintenance a forged-blade knife could last one lifetime. also check the knife’s maintenance-package and really take extra care with it by reading the instructions and following them carefully when sharpening your knives, there are many tools available today. But my most favored would be that steel-sharpening rod & that two-stage ‘knife sharpener’, I usually don’t prefer using those electric ones. What’s also great when using regular sharpening models is that they actually cost approximately half as much and performs equally the same superior job. when looking in enhancing kitchen productivity, getting quality knives is the ultimate best step to achieve that. I did suffer using those cheap stamped-blade knives. it was only recently that I realized that together with great techniques and that quality superior-knife. I now can definitely cut about 1/2 the time on my slicing, dicing & chopping duties. good Luck!

Maintaining Your Kitchen Knives

After you have gone over all the options for buying knives and finally made a choice, you’ll purchase the newest member of your kitchen. When knives come new from the factory, they are extremely sharp. And they will stay that way for several months. Then overnight it seems, they get dull. One day, you’ll try to cut a tomato and the knife won’t slice through it; it will smash it down. Juice and seeds will cover your cutting board. Now you know it’s time to sharpen the knife. You probably thought all your decisions were over when you made the purchase. But that isn’t so. Now you can choose which way you’ll sharpen the knife. And perhaps more importantly, what kind of maintenance you’ll do in the future. There are several things to consider.

First of all, you know the electric can openers that have a knife sharpener in the back? Never, ever use it. A can opener is a can opener. It was not engineered to sharpen a knife. Second, take some care in choosing a cutting board. Wood and plastic are excellent choices. Always avoid metal and marble. They ruin even the best knife blades. And the knives we have at home aren’t usually the best! Third, never store your knives loosely in the drawer. Not only is it dangerous; it’s bad for the blades. Store them in a wood block or on a metal strip. And finally, always hand wash the knives. Don’t put them in the dishwasher. The heat can damage the handles and it’s not good to have them banging against other silverware.

Once you’ve found a good maintenance routine, it’s important to make regular knife sharpening part of that schedule. Rather than waiting until the knife is noticeable dull, it’s a good idea to sharpen it regularly. We’ve already established that using the sharpener on the back of a can opener is a no-no. Many homeowners sharpen their knives with the long sharpening steel that comes with a wooden block knife storage system. A better way to sharpen your knives is using a stone. And not just any stone. An Arkansas stone is often used or a Japanese water stone. Either of these will yield the best results.

If you aren’t inclined to sharpen the knives yourself but really want them sharp, you can take them to a local store to have them sharpened professionally. Or you can send them away to a national retailer.

10 Tips to Become a Better Cook

If you’re new to cooking, then you’ll probably be watching all the cookery programmes you can, asking others for advice and trying to learn more about how you can get better. If you’re more experienced, then perhaps you’re stuck in a rut, cooking the same things all the time. Here’s how you can progress and be a better cook.

1. It’s important that you use good quality fresh ingredients. Whatever you cook, will taste better if you use nice fresh ingredients. Why not get your fruit form a greengrocers, and your meat from a butcher? It might be a bit more expensive, but it’ll definitely be worth it and you’ll learn which vegetables, and which cuts of meat will be best for the dish you’re cooking.

2. Good cookware is a worthwhile investment. You’ll soon notice that your food cooks more evenly, cooks quicker and tastes better too. It will last for many years and be easy to clean. Remember, that if it’s good enough to be used by a world famous chef in their kitchen, it’s probably good enough for your kitchen!

3. Try not to get too ambitious too quickly. You’ll want to be able to cook the basics first, before you try and create delicate masterpieces, or 5 course meals for a dinner party

4. Constantly be on the look out for recipes that you might like. As well as recipe books, why not see if there are any in your daily newspaper, monthly magazines or on the websites you visit. You’re also likely to find dedicated recipe sites which can give you some ideas if you’re stuck.

5. It’s a good idea to get to know your cooker well. Some recipes will make allowances for fan assisted ovens, or for gas ovens. You’ll need to learn whether your cooker is actually at the temperature it says it’s at.

6. It’s not the end of the world if your dishes don’t turn out quite as you’d hoped. At least you tried. You might be able to salvage the meal, or maybe you’ll make something else instead.

7. If things don’t go according to plan, you’ll want to be able to learn from your mistakes. Perhaps your oven wasn’t at the right temperature. Perhaps one part was ready too soon, or maybe you forgot to put the oven on. Whatever went wrong, as long as you can learn from it, it’s not wasted.

8. You might want to learn from others. Perhaps you’ll ask friends and relatives about their favourite recipes, or what size pans they use. You’ll be able to use their experience to help you become a better cook.

9. If you’re stuck for ideas, why not as other people to help you? Ask your family what they’d like to eat, or what they’d like you to be able to cook, and see if you can do it.

10. Above all, cooking should be fun. If you’re not enjoying it, then why not take a break, and see if you can get some inspiration from somewhere else, or ask someone else to do the cooking for a change?

Now you know how you can be a better cook, what’s stopping you from putting on your apron?

Food Gal » Blog Archiv » Global Knife Give-Away — Yeah, That's …

There are moments in cooking that are truly life-changing.

My first time using a really sharp, really well-made knife was such an instance.

I had grown up using my parents’ mishmash of knives that were piled in a kitchen drawer and sharpened only in a blue moon.

In my 20s, though, I purchased my first high-end carbon steel chef’s knife on sale at a department store. I brought it home, unwrapped it from its box, and set a yellow onion on a cutting board to give it a try.

With my first slice through the onion, I nearly shrieked. The knife glided through the dense layers of  the hard onion as easily as a puck whooshes around an air hockey table. I cut another slice, and nearly yelped again. What a joy this was! To be able to cut such thin slivers or chop so evenly — all completely effortlessly — was truly a revelation.

A good knife is absolutely one of the best investments any cook can make.

Of course, it’s not always easy to shell out that kind of money, especially in these challenging times. That’s why I’m thrilled to be able to give one lucky Food Gal reader a “Global 7-inch Oriental Chef’s Knife.” Global knives are beloved by serious cooks worldwide for their sharp, precise, thin blades. These elegant Japanese knives sell for a pretty penny, too.

I have the folks at CSN stores to thank for allowing me to give away such a coveted prize. CSN has more than 200 online stores that sell everything from cookware to yoga accessories to bamboo flooring to
