People are still buying stuff off the TV, it seems, because the commercials selling the stuff are still everywhere.  I was briefly fascinated by the reality series Pitchmen before star Billy Mays’ death, partly because it detailed the grammar necessary to qualify for special TV offer — including BOGO, the standard “we’ll double your order!” thrown in for free (just pay separate shipping & handling).

What makes me sad, though, is how quickly yesterday’s starring product becomes today’s bonus freebie.  Consider the amazing vegetable chopper, that hand-powered device to which whole infomercials were devoted years ago.  Now if you buy the Pasta Boat, you not only get two Pasta Boats (of course) but also two amazing choppers.  A whole 5 precious seconds of TV ad time is allotted to the chopper in the Pasta Boat ad.

Next year I fully expect to be able to get those two Pasta Boats thrown in to sweeten the deal for some other gadget I can’t live without.  And I imagine the demoted products shedding a little tear as they’re thrown into the shipping box solely to squeeze an extra s&h charge out of customers, remembering the days when a television personality lovingly demonstrated them for studio audiences full of admiring fans.

The problem with really cheap kitchen knives is that they simply don’t last. Knives bought at a discount in most department stores will crap out within a year, either rusting or losing sharpness completely. Sometimes these sets can last a bit longer if you sharpen them at home, but the low-end material of the knives themselves typically won’t hold up over time.

Basically, finding a quality kitchen knife set at an affordable price is nearly impossible. That’s ‘nearly’ impossible not ‘completely’ impossible. There are a couple sets that you should definitely look into if your budget isn’t all that forgiving. Below we’ll cover a couple of them:

Ginsu Chikara 8-Piece Stainless Steel Knife Set

Probably the best bang for your buck, the Ginsu Chikara 8-Piece set is priced under $100, usually around $80, and is more of a Japanese style knife. It comes with all the basic knives (paring, chef’s, and santoku), they cut great and handle well with the full metal tang, and are a Consumers Reports top pick for kitchen knives. They will take some more maintenance then a Henckels or Wusthof brand knife, however, the Ginsu Chikara knives are a fraction of the price of these brands and won’t turn into throwaways within a year or two of use.

Chicago Cutlery Landmark 12-Piece Knife Set with Block

Chicago Cutlery is a brand of knives that tend to be on the more affordable side. They’re typically not forged or made from the highest quality of high carbon stainless steel, but they’re a usable blade for the average home cook. The Landmark series set will last a good couple years with some routine maintenance and careful hand washing.  Perfectly suited for someone just looking to have a knife set that is functional while looking to upgrade in a year or two. At less then $100, there are sets that are much worse.

They are cheap junk! Knives should be a good investment for life and good worth its weight in gold. Germans are the best and my favorite brand is Wusthof Trident. You can buy online or in the finest department stores or gourmet kitchen. See them here … My wusthof.knives-and-cutlery.com/wusthof_classic/wusthof_classic.html recommendations for cooking usually includes a knife, a serrated knife tomato (for many purposes), all purpose knives sandwich (general use), 5 “santoku, 8″ chef’s knife, 10 or 12 “slicing knife and steel” for tuning. You can also add a serrated bread knife. If you make a special food preparation pieces you can add whatever would be appropriate. You will be surprised of the options. I also recommend a magnet for the storage of the wall opposite the block. They are more accessible and do not take up counter space.

Didn’t know what I was going to get. Said In Stock, but took 15 days to ship with Super Saver.

Second, Amazon & J. A. went out of their way not to let me know what the slot sizes are. The one I got fortunately has 20 slots. One for scissors & one for a steel, a 3 1/4″ cleaver slot, 4 – 2″ slots, 2 each 1 3/8″ & 1″ slots, 1 – 1 1/4″ slot and 8 – 3/4″ slots for steak knives.

Now, my cleaver won’t fit in the cleaver slot, but that isn’t a problem because my 10″ chefs knife won’t fit in any of the other slots so it has to go in the cleaver slot. My 12″ roast slicer doesn’t have a prayer. All the other knives I don’t use fit fine.

All in all it’s a nice block at a nice price. I didn’t like wondering for three weeks what I bought.
