This bargain set of forged steel knives appears to be more than it actually is, since six of the knives in the block are stamped steel steak knives. After counting the block, sharpening steel, and kitchen shears, that leaves only three actual prep knives.
The workhorse knives you do get include an eight-inch chef’s knife, five-and-a-half-inch utility knife, and three-and-a-half-inch paring knife. All three are drop-forged with taper-ground edges and solid steel bolsters. The chef’s knife is the most versatile, used for slicing and chopping meats and vegetables of all kinds. The number of applications depends on your skill with the blade — different parts perform different functions from chopping to dicing and mincing.
The utility knife and paring knife will handle sandwich prep, boning, and prepping and peeling fruits and veggies. This isn’t a set of knives capable of handling everything in the kitchen. You’ll miss having other important blades like santoku and bread knife.
Although Chicago Cutlery is an American company, this cutlery set was manufactured in China. The high carbon stainless steel blades are of ordinary quality but backed by a good lifetime warranty. The knives should be hand washed only, if you expect that warranty to apply. Dishwashing machines could degrade the blade steel and corrode the rivets holding the polymer handle slabs in place.
Although it’s more expensive, the Henckels Class 7-Piece Block Set offers more and better prep knives without the steak knife set.

This knife is excellent and I enjoy using it because it is always sharp. I have a set of these knifes and found that they are better than more expensive knifes.Click!! I was pleasantly surprised with the workmanship of these knives. When they arrived, I ordered all the old knives outta the house. (that went over like a lead baloon) I don’t think we had 2 matching knives in the entire house. Well we do know! For the price I think we dune good!!
“You get what you pay for” 2009-03-24

Cheap, in all meanings… I use these when I’m feeling too lazy to clean my Henckels. You can toss this cheap crap in the dishwasher. Who cares if it ruins it after a while?
“knives” 2009-03-23
By Raquel Armida Amezcua (California)
The knives are great with the exception of the chipped wood where the steak knives are held. It looks like it migtht have been dropped because there is a “dent” and wood missing. Otherwise, the knives are sharpe and organized nicely.

Carving a Ribeye Roast
Steak knives for summer BBQs are almost as important as the steak you grill. Although most BBQs feature nothing more than hot dogs and burgers, the serious home griller doesn’t shy away from steak.
So whether it’s a ribeye, porterhouse, NY Strip, flank, or filet mignon, summer is here, and nothing tastes better than a fire grilled steak. So whip up your best marinade or dry rub (or simply grill as is), sear in the juices and fire to taste (I prefer medium myself), then get ready to dig in. Since you won’t simply pick up your steak and start gnawing at one end, you’re going to have to make sure you have a good set of steak knives. This way, the only thing you need to think about is how great your steak tastes, not how you wish you had a better knife so you could cut it easier.
So what are some of the best steak knives available?

What people say about Global 10-Inch Chef’s Knife (by Yoshikin):

The Global Flagship. This and a paring knife will easily get the casual cook through any task that might confront them, though it is quite sizable and likely to frighten the burgeoning crowds of soccer mom sommeliers looking to duplicate something they saw on Paula Deen this week. Perfectly balanced and versatile. I actually bought this knife locally and compared with the 8. Sharp as nothing else, extremly well balanced. I have the 12 inch version of this knife as wellas the 10 inch bread knife! Bought another. I was so impressed with the 10″ that I bought a 7″ santuko. A wonderful tool. The Global 10″ is a great knife that comes with a very sharp edge. The global with an edge. This global is a light weight knife with a razor edge, that last for a long time. The best knife on the market … ( for this price …) I use the Global 10″ is for meat cuts , of large steaks ,in only one pass, and also of course , for general use ( she is wonderful making slices of salmon )The Global 8″ is also great , but not for cutting steaks , in ONE pass . Expensive, pretty and not easy to sharpen. I don’t know what it is about this particular knife. Go Big–you won’t regret it. If you buy this knife, it will be your most-used kitchen implement. My weapon of choice. In my Kitchen, this 10 inch Global chef’s knife is the weapon of my choice.
Works like an extension of your hand. Sometimes you run into a tool that just balances and handles beautifully, when you pick it up it seems to know what to do. My favorite… I own both wusthof-trident and henckels sets but this is my favorite knife. Perfect. I recently got this knife; I had been wanting a Global Chef’s knife since I was given a Global utility knife as a gift. Cashy, but very comfortable to use. Very well made, but for the money, I would expect more attention to removing machine marks and burrs. Amazon Shipping. The knives have a reputation that preceeds them.

If you are looking for quality cutlery for the home or for your business kitchen you will find that there are a lot of different options to choose from. Not only are there different sizes and styles, you will find that there are a lot of brands that are competing for your attention. Which ones are quality? Which ones are worth the money that you will need to pay for a quality set of knives? It can be overwhelming when you start shopping because there is so much to choose from and knives really are an investment if you do it right.
When shopping you will most certainly come across Henckels, which is a brand of well known knives. When you begin looking at this manufacturer you will find that they have many different tiers or collections of knives for you to choose from. They range from the most elite which are generally meant for the chef or restaurant kitchen all the way to the set that is made for and priced for use in the home. This will give you a broad assortment of knives to choose from, allowing for you to choose items or sets that will most definitely fit your needs so you don’t get more or less than you need but you can also choose something that fits into your budget.
Wusthof is another great brand that you might want to look at. This brand is not as well known as Henckles, but this manufacturer brings as much quality and durability to the table as Henckle, but they are a bit different. If you have never tried this manufacturer before, you should be sure to hold one before you buy, just to make sure that it works well for your specific uses and the way that you like to hold a knife.
These are not the only brands for you to consider when shopping for cutlery, they are just two of the most well known and the most well respected because they are durable, reliable, and generally very high quality. You will find that they are a bit more costly than a lot of the other brands out there, but when it comes to cutlery you really do get what you pay for and if you invest a bit more you are going to get a lot more use out of the knives.
If you aren’t sure where to buy these brands in your area, you can generally visit your local knife shop and they can show you a nice assortment. If they do not have the knives on hand, chances are they will be able to order them for you, or will be able to direct you to a resource that will have everything that you need. If there is a brand that you know you like, you can often order straight from the manufacturer, which may or may not allow you to get a better deal on the purchase.
With so many cutlery brands to choose from deciding which ones to consider can seem daunting. To make it easier, take a look below at three tips to get you heading off in the right direction.
1. For Precision Cutting Consider Japanese Knives
Japanese knives are all the rage right now! If you’re interested in chopping and slicing with a lightweight (compared to traditional Western knives) knife containing an ultra sharp blade, Japanese knives are for you. Some of the brands to consider are: Global, Kershaw and Hattori. These manufacturers offer a complete selection of cutlery including Santoku knives, paring, cleavers, fillet, boning and more.
2. For Traditional Heft Consider Western Knives
If you like cutting with a substantial kitchen knife offering balance as well as heft consider German knives such as Wusthof and Henckels. For the best quality choose from collections that feature fully forged knives. Two other Western cutlery makers include: Sabatier (France) and Victorinox (Switzerland). And, as with Wusthof and Henckels, stick with the forged lines for premium quality. If you are looking for more affordable cutlery, take a look at the stamped lines to each of these manufacturers. Typically, these lines are made elsewhere, (China or Spain) not in the respective manufacturers’ country.
3. To Get a Bang for your Buck: Buy Knife Sets and Shop for Sales
If you’re looking to stretch your dollar further without skimping on quality, look for knife sets (such as 3 piece sets) or buy a knife block with versatile cutlery types: chef’s knife, bread knife, utility knife, paring knife, sharpening steel and such included. Buying sets as opposed to individual cutlery can definitely save you money. However, make sure that the sizes and cutlery types included are ones that you will use.
Additionally, if you are looking for a particular cutlery brand, save yourself some money by comparison shopping several kitchenware shops online. There is always the retail price, now look for the sale price. In addition, by spending over a certain amount, shipping will likely be included.
