 “Highly rated” 2010-06-22
By J. Berry
After doing lots of research, I decided to purchase this set of Wüsthof knives and am glad I did. I was concerned that the slicer and chef’s knives might be short, but they are perfect! I actually like them better than my older longer knives because they are easier to control. I hadn’t realized that my old knives were just a little too long for me all these years.

I like the balance on the knives and the handles feel good in my hand. The way the blade and handle come together on the knives is nice and smooth and much easier to clean than my old knives. My fingers feel protected. The blades are nice and sharp.

I am happy with my purchase!

A sharp edge , the ability to hold it, and balance are truly worth the price.

“Can’t go wrong with Wusthof” 2009-01-24
By linph (Houston, TX United States)
I bought this set of knives to replace some that had been stolen. I didn’t want the entire block set again because experience taught me which knives received the most use. I didn’t want to buy everything separately and the kits I’d seen previously didn’t include the sharpening rod. When I saw this set, which included all the things I wanted, I bought it immediately. It’s SO nice to have good knives again!

“Excellent cutlery from a respected maker” 2006-12-30
By A photographer (Planet Earth)
I bought this set for my wife for Christmas, mainly because I was stuck on ideas as to what to get her. She spends a lot of time in the kitchen and she had been using an old set of Chicago Cutlery and several unbranded cheap giveaway knives for several years. None of those knives were that great or that sharp and I hated trying to put an edge on them even though I’m pretty good at sharpening knives.

Essentially, knives are just sharpened pieces of steel that appear to be pretty simple, straightforward instruments that shouldn’t be difficult to produce. But a little experience with some poor examples prove this to not be the case. Like most seemingly simple things, the simplicity is an illusion.

My experience has not been with kitchen knives but it has been with “working” knives. Pocket knives and fixed blade knives designed for hard use in the nasty jobs I have to do daily from removing staples in papers at the office to chopping down woody weeds in the backyard to cutting up boxes, rope, cording and thin pieces of aluminum. I know the value of a blade that can take a good edge and hold it through a lot of abuse.

I did a little research and found several brands of kitchen knives that had universal respect. Wusthof always was at or near the top of everyone’s list. More often than not, it was number one in the reviews and surveys I came across.

My wife was a little apprehensive about the sharpness of the knives out of the box. She quickly realized the value of a really sharp kitchen knife and, in no time, she was commenting on how much easier it was to work with the Wusthof’s than the cheapo knives she had been using. She has really been making good use of the paring knife and the chef’s knife in the days since Christmas. My own limited use of the chef’s knife from this set confirms how well it handles and cuts compared to the clunky Chicago Cutlery chef’s knife.

After looking over more reviews, I’ve ordered the Wusthof 7″ hollow edge santoku to go with this set. Designed for thin cuts, it will fit in well with the other knives. I’ll probably also get a serrated edge bread knife in the not-too-distant future to round out the Wusthof set. This is likely to be a lifetime purchase for our household and that makes the high price more of an investment. I’m well pleased and so is my wife.

 “Excellent Knives” 2009-01-10
By J. Lambo (Los Angeles)
They were a gift for Xmas. I wanted a new set of knives, but was not expecting anything as nice as these. They are incredible, and have a very nice feel and balance…oh yeah, they are very sharp too. I first tested them on a not so fresh tomato, and they handled that with ease. I have since used them in a variety of manners, and have been impressed. The only other knife i would have considered buying on my own, were the Kai Shuns…

I gave this set to my boyfriend for xmas (he’s been wanting a nice set of knives for awhile) and he LOVES them. Very good quality. You definitely get what you paid for with these knives.

 “Better than the best” 2008-12-16
By Warren J. Dew (Somerville, MA USA)
The first time I ever saw a Wusthof Culinar knife, I did not know what it was. I already had a collection of Wusthof Classic kitchen cutlery, and I was looking for a second, smaller, chef’s knife to fit one of the few remaining slots in my knife block. Among the many small chef’s knives in that well stocked knife store was an unusual looking knife with a stainless steel handle – a marked contrast to the traditional black handles that were on all the other knives in the store, Wusthof or otherwise.

Curious, I picked up the unusual knife. It didn’t feel like simply picking up a knife, though. Rather, it was as if the hilt molded itself to my hand, becoming an integral part of me rather than a mere implement. Despite the different look – at the time a major negative to a traditionalist like myself – I found myself considering buying it, in preference even to a traditional knife that would match the rest of my set.

When asked, the salesman stated, incorrectly, that the knife did not have a full length tang – and so I did not buy the knife on that day. I found out later that the blade – of the same high carbon stainless steel as Wusthof’s traditional blades – has a tang that reaches nearly to the pommel end of the 18/10 stainless steel handle, where it is secured by a rivet embossed with the Wusthof trident.

I did not buy that knife on that day, but when it came time for me to upgrade my steak knives, I chose Culinar knives over all alternatives, despite the greater expense. I also dreamed of upgrading my kitchen knives to the Culinar line – to a set like this one – though I doubted I could ever justify the cost.

So what is in this set? Two pieces are not knives: the block and the sharpening steel. The block is handy for easy storage and drying of the knives after washing, and is of beautiful smooth maple – not oak – that is nicer than any other knife block I’ve seen. The steel is essential for occasional honing of the knives to keep them sharp. The tests I’ve seen on the internet show Wusthof steels to be more consistently hard than those from their competitors – important to ensure that it is the knives that are honed, rather than the steel that wears smooth.

Of the knives, the 20 cm (8″) chef’s knife is the one most used – perfect for all a manner of cutting. The 20 cm carving knife is used to serve roasts and birds after they leave the kitchen; the bread knife’s serrated edge, also 20 cm in length, cuts the crustiest loaf.

The set includes three special purpose knives: a 9 cm (3.5″) paring knife, a 14 cm (nominally 5″, but closer to 5.5″) boning knife, and a 14 cm tomato knife. The paring knife, while small for other tasks, is the perfect length for, well, paring – peeling potatoes and other tasks which involve cutting something held in the other hand, where a short blade helps to speed the work while avoiding injury. The boning knife has a narrow, maneuverable blade to help remove meat from sometimes irregular bones, and an oversize grip for the extra control that is sometimes needed for this job. The tomato knife has a serrated blade that is useful in slicing tomatoes and similar objects – where a nonserrated knife may slip when cutting the skin at a shallow angle – and a doubly pointed tip that can be used to position the resulting slices.

Finally, there are two more general purpose knives. One, a 12 cm (4.5″) utility knife, is useful for odd jobs on the slimmer vegetables and other small objects. The other, a 16 cm (6″) “sandwich” knife, can take on some medium size cutting tasks when the chef’s knife is dirty, or can be used on the smaller odd jobs; it’s also perfect for slicing a long, thin tenderloin roast.

This is an ideal knife set for the home chef. When I saw it on Amazon at less than one third of list, it was a bargain I could not pass up. That day I replaced my beloved Wusthof Classic knives with these Culinars. If you can get a similar price – or if the current price is something you can afford – I recommend that you, too, take advantage of this opportunity.

“Best knives I’ve ever used” 2007-02-11
By Christine E. Nattrass (New Haven, CT United States)
If you’re serious about cooking good knives are probably the most important utensil. These knives are great. They cut through everything superbly. You have to be careful in handling them, though. I had a friend over who put one of them in a stack of other silverware where it got jostled around and the blade wasn’t protected and the edge was noticeably dulled. It was easily sharpened with a few times through a standard knife sharpener (like any good blade) but you should take care to keep the knives in a block and not let the blade have too much contact with other metal. And of course use a wood or soft plastic cutting board.

The balance in the handle is excellent. It is really easy to use these knives because they do not put much strain on the wrist. The handles grip well. The knives clean easily. The only problem is that it will be hard for other knives to ever satisfy you after you’ve used these.

My biggest complaint was with the company which sells them through Amazon.com. Macy’s shipped the order with a knife missing and over a month later I still do not have the knife from Macy’s. Macy’s has handled the problem incompetently, promising repeatedly to ship the knife “soon” and failing to do so. I may yet return the knives for that reason.

“Terriffic Tool for any kitchen” 2010-06-25
By StevenJM (Pittsburgh, PA)
This knife set is as good as professional quality. The convenient block holds the entire set and fits easily on the counter even in a small kitchen. The handles have a good feel, especially in the larger knives and the blades are sharp and true. Adding a pair of kitchen shears is a nice bonus. A top set and a great gift.

“Does Not Make The Cut” 2010-06-21
By Lee Mellott (Frederick, Maryland)
The knife block and the advertising copy is probably the best part of the Victorinox 7-Piece Knife Set. Prior to getting the knife set, I read the copy and expected an ultra high tech, quality knife set.

I pulled the first knife out of the block and was struck by how it did not have a good “hand” feel to it. It felt flimsy. It cut decently but I almost felt like it might fly out of my hand or break easily.

The set includes the basic knives which are great to have and one can always do with a good pair of kitchen shears but overall I just feel you can find better elsewhere.

I asked hubby who has an eye for quality and daughter who loves to cook for their evaluation. I also offered it to daughter since I already own a knife set. She turned it down saying it felt cheap and she preferred her old set. My husband said it was flimsy and he would not recommend.

Overall I would suggest looking elsewhere for a knife set. This set does not cut the mustard.

“Outstanding Starter Cutlery Set w/ Sturdy Woodblock” 2010-06-19
By Leif Sheppard (United States)
Prior to ordering this product, I actually didn’t have a woodblock knife storage unit in my kitchen. I just kept my knives in a drawer next to the fridge. So I always knew there was something missing there, between the toaster and the stove, a kitchen simply isn’t complete without one of these babies ornamenting the countertop. It says to the curious visitor: “Yes, I can do things in the kitchen apart from nuking Hot Pockets and heating up Beefaroni.” It exudes elegance and class, it’s a masterpiece of form and functionality, and it holds knives too.

I was quite pleased to note that this set proudly meets the expectations that it’s slightly steep price induces. It’s a great starter set of knives, beginning with an eight inch butcher knife. Actually it’s called a “Chef’s” knife here, which is probably more politically correct, not to mention more accurate. If you’re doing any ‘butchering’ in your kitchen, please don’t invite me to dinner.

There’s also a five inch junior chef’s knife included, as well as a four and a half inch tomato knife and a paring knife that’s slightly over three inches long. The sharpening steel is a nice addition (and a great way to intimidate the meatloaf), combine this with a formidable pair of scissors and you have quite a product on your hands. All are sturdy and quality made products.

This seven-piece set includes:

1) 3 1/4″ paring knife

2) 4 1/2″ tomato/bagel knife (okay, it’s really a serrated butter knife)

3) 5″ mini-chef’s / utility knife

4) 8″ chef’s knife

6) Kitchen Shear (fancy pants name for scissors, eh?)

7) Great quality woodblock to store them all, with three extra slots for any knives you may already own

Since this baby has been sitting on my counter, all manner of visitors to my home have been struck by the presence this beast makes in the kitchen. The sharpening steel has a hook at the butt of the handle, which I used to hang it over the stove. This says to your company: “Stand back. This man knows how to use knives.” I love this set, cooking will never be the same in my kitchen. Highly recommended.

Now where are those Hot Pockets. . .

 “Four Knives Plus…” 2010-06-17
By EMTP EJ (Washington, DC USA)
Four knives plus a sharpening steel, plus a pair of kitchen scissors, plus a wood block holder equals seven pieces.

It is good you can actually see the set here on Amazon as the box it comes in is a little misleading because there is a knife in every slot in the photo. Part of consistent quality cooking is good equipment and these knives are excellent tools. They are extraordinarily sharp and the handles are durable and comfortable are easy to keep clean and sanitary. One other note – the paring knife does not bear the Victorinox markings. The pair of kitchen shears, as I recall from the box, are made in Italy and do not bear the Victorinox markings, either — so they are not exactly like other shears or scissors from the company. They are still solid, sharp, and useful, though. I am not really sure why you would want a 5 inch and a 8 inch chef’s knife as they are not that different in size.

From what I can tell, the set consists of the following:

Victorinox 3-1/4-Inch Paring Knife(but it doesn’t have the markings)

Victorinox 125th Anniversary Limited Edition 4-1/2-Inch Tomato/Bagel Knife(without the 125th anniversary stuff)

Victorinox 5-Inch Mini-Chef’s Knife with Fibrox Handle

Victorinox Fibrox 8-Inch Chef’s Knife

Kitchen Shear, 3 in., Black Nylon Handle

Victorinox Cutlery 9-Inch Round Sharpening Steel, Black Plastic Handle

Still, a good set for the price at this time ($110.00 US) and it would make a good gift or starter set for a household that does not have a good set of knives.

“Terrific choice at this price point” 2010-06-16
By Aderyn (Small-Town Michigan, USA)
These knives are an outstanding value for the money. I’m not a chef by any means, but I am a dedicated home cook who wants good tools that are satisfying to use. The knives in this set are exactly that, and at a bargain price.

I agree that this is not the best looking set of knives you’ll ever own; calling their design “basic” is almost generous. Whether or not you will ultimately like the fit and feel of the handles is a purely personal decision. One of the best pieces of advice someone who is a professional chef ever gave me about choosing knives was to try them out. Everyone’s hands are different, everyone’s preferences for how knives feel in their hands are different.

As to whether I would give this set as a gift, it would depend entirely on what I was trying to accomplish with the gift. If I wanted to give something that looked high-end and showy, maybe not. If I wanted to give someone a set of very functional, very effective, very well handling knives, you bet I would.

THE best for the price
After searching stores looking for a knife set I began researching online. I found this set and was a bit reluctant. They didn’t come with a knife block, they didn’t have wooden handles, and the brand wasn’t ringing a bell. But they were rated so highly, and the comments so positive, I decided to take a chance. They are AMAZING! Manufactured by the company that makes Swiss Army Knives, they are beautifully made. These three knives will do virtually anything you need done in the kitchen, so you don’t really need more knives. They have excellent weight, good balance, and the grip feels ergonomic. While priced at the low end for good knives, you feel you are using the Mercedes of knives. This is a great set for anyone who loves cooking or quality. And as an aside, I was happy to have to find an alternative to the knife block. I got a strip magnet, and it is so much better!

Great knives
I just purchased this knife set for my son for Christmas, after reading good reviews. The knives have met all my expectations so far. They are very sharp, and the fibrox handles are substantial, non-slip, and comfortatble. The first test was 4 butternut squash my son volunteered to peel and cut up for Christmas dinner. Cutting hard squash is a task I don’t look forward to, but the paring knife did the peeling, and the chef’s knife did the chopping, with no problem. I then borrowed the paring knife to cut up an onion, and was amazed at how easily it went through the onion compared to the Chicago Cutlery I’ve used for years. For less than $50, I’m ready to buy another set for myself!

Forschner Quality is Tops
A must have for every kitchen. I own Chicago Cutlery, Cutco and others, but my Forschner knives are the ones I reach for time after time. If you’ve never tried them, you don’t know what you’re missing. Go ahead… spoil yourself!

Victorinox Cutlery 9-Inch Churrasco Knife, Black Fibrox Handle …

The R H Forschner by Victorinox Churrasco Knife features high carbon, stainless steel blade, hand finished at Victorinox in Switzerland by skilled craftsmen. A special tempering process is used to produce an edge that can be resharpened over and over again, so the knife can keep its original sharpness throughout the entire life of the blade. Victorinox handles are ergonomically designed to minimize wrist tension. They provide a natural fit. A good heft and comfortable, positive grip are indications of a well-made knife. A sure-grip handle with a finger guard is valuable feature since the handle inevitably gets greasy, wet, or both. Although cutlery steel is naturally sanitary, materials and construction details of the handle minimize crevices what would offer hospitality to bacteria.

“2 broken tips out of 6, and not that sharp” 2009-07-09
By A. Neilll (Goochland, VA USA)
I have had these for a few years. After the first year one of the tips broke off. A couple of years later another tip broke off, this time cutting an apple.

I don’t have the warranty to know where to return these to, so I am stuck with them, but seriously I just want some better knives rather than paying to ship the bad ones somewhere and wait for a possible refund.

Even through I prefer Wustof to Henkels on the high end stuff, we have a cheap set of Henkels stamped steak knives that seem more sturdy and cut better than these.

 “Not worth the money” 2008-07-26
By Coffee Lover (USA)
These “fine” knives doesn’t stay sharp as long my Chicago Cutlery steak knives and the handles crack at the rivets. The logo-labels peel off leaving the adhesive on the handle. If they had a different sticker on the handle, they would be one quarter the price. I have a full set of Wusthof knives and there is no comparison.

“Good value in steak knives” 2008-03-07
By Henry (seattle)
I have a set of these steak knives and love them.

Unlike most inexpensive steak knives these knives are fine edge and not serrated. I like the cut of fine edge knives. They make clean cuts without shreading. These are stamped knives which are a lot less expensive than the forged Classic knives in my set but they look the same and for how much they are used they perform well at half the price of the forged knives. I have never had the rusting problem, but I hand wash all my knives. These are not stainless steel. I heard once that most of the time when knives rust it is because they are put in the dishwasher. The dishwasher leaves metal deposits on your flatware. When those deposits dry they turn to rust. Come to find out it is usually your dishwasher that is rusting when this happens. I never stick good knives in the dishwasher.

 “Flimsy” 2007-11-23
By Claire Burke
These are quite flimsy and develop rust spots extremely easily. Not the quality one would expect from this company. We have several of Wusthof Classic’s line (Chef’s, paring, utility, etc) have found them to be sturdy, true, well-balanced in the hand and have held up very well over the past 3 years in our busy kitchen. We didn’t expect these steak knives to be of the same quality, but they were suprisingly low quality for the brand and the cost.

 “The quality is lacking.” 2005-06-09
By Baltimore Jack (Baltimore, MD)
These are not what you’d expect from Wusthof. The Wusthof symbol on the handle is a STICKER (!!!) which bleaches out after washing. Also, after 1 months use and washing, we’re getting rust spots. While these knives are sharp, they are not holding up appearance wise. Very disappointed.

 “My fiancé is jealous.” 2001-10-24
By Stephen Green (Colorado Springs, CO United States)
Oh, dear God, I love these knives. Their weight in your hand is hefty without being tiring. The blades are sharp, precise, and easy to handle. And do they slice? I mean — and do they SLICE!!!

After each meal, I hand-wash these instruments and give them a quick touch of the sharpening stone. I then gently, very gently, place them back into their case for safekeeping. Is it any wonder my fiancé is jealous?

I do have one complaint — I only have four of these knives. I’m going to need at least eight more for the grilling I plan to do next summer. I mean, it’s going to take a big patio party to properly show off these fine blades.

 “Best knives ever” 2001-07-09

Received the “Pro” kitchen set as a gift for Christmas. ….They are sharper than any other knife, cut through everything like butter, and hold very naturally in your hand. So, when I received a gift certificate for Amazon, I thought “why not”… I’ll get a matching steak knife set …. But ONCE AGAIN, I found that the price is worth it… I LOVE MY HENCKEL “PRO” KNIVES!!! This will be the last set I’ll ever have to buy.
