Please take a moment to admire the beauty and elegance of Deglon’s Meeting Knife Set.

Ok, ready? Let’s continue.
Designed by Mia Schmallenbach, this design is a wonderful exercise of merging utility with aesthetics. A sublimely beautiful design that stopped me dead in my tracks, and compelled me to study how to lines and shapes worked together. Furthermore this design is not just “form for form’s sake”. The knives cleverly tuck back into each other like Russian dolls thereby organizing and removing clutter on your kitchen counter. Some people have concerns on the functionality, but I’ll reserve judgment on this until I get a chance to hold one myself.
Here is what Mia had to say about her design.
Meeting is a set of kitchen knives: paring knife, carving knife, chef’s knife, filleting knife and their block. They all seem to be sculpted out of one piece of steel. The proportions are determined by the Fibonacci sequence with as its base the average width of a hand.
It is refreshing to see old school design methodologies, such as the Fibonacci sequence, given a new lease of life by combining the thinking with modern manufacturing technologies. Found everywhere in nature, we know that Fibonacci sequences work well in design, as proven by the Renaissance masters in the past. And it looks like it is still relevant in today’s context.
A big thanks to Shang Lee for this wonderful find.

And, no surprise, orange is her favorite color. A snappy gift for an aspiring chef, this set consists of a slender birch-wood block and these nine Gusto Grip knives and utensils: 3-1/2-inch paring knife, 5-inch boning knife, 6-inch serrated utility knife, 7-inch East/West knife, 8-inch bread knife, 8-inch cook’s knife, 8-inch carving knife, carving fork, and a pair of heavy-duty poultry shears.
Strong without being heavy, each Füri Rachael Ray Gusto Grip knife is constructed from a single piece of superior German CrMoV stainless-steel alloy, with a forged bolster and strong tang. Molded around the tang is an inner core of durable polypropylene and an outer layer of synthetic rubber for all-day, non-slip comfort. One new feature is the anti-microbial agent permanently infused into the polypropylene. The handles feature the patented Füri reverse-wedge shape that prevents the hand from sliding toward the sharp blade even when wet. At the tail, a stainless-steel counterweight provides perfect balance. Füritechnics recommends washing the knives by hand and sharpening them periodically with the company’s own Diamond Fingers system. The set measures approximately 13 by 2-3/4 by 12-1/4 inches, and is covered by a limited lifetime warranty. –Ann Bieri

I paid more than $4 for this set so I’m kicking myself a bit, although I feel like they were still a decent deal for the $9 I did pay. That made them cheaper than a lot of the other inexpensive knives in the kitchen section where I was browsing, and they’re definitely better quality than those other inexpensive knives.
I had my doubts about the plastic handles but they feel more solid and substantial than plastic usually does, seem well-attached to the blades, and don’t slip in my hand. They’re surprisingly comfortable. I also like being able to tell my 10-year-old “Get me the utility knife, that’s the blue one”. It’s too bad they’re ugly, but you can’t have everything, especially not for $9.
The blades were sharper than I expected and I, too, cut myself using them almost immediately (because I was used to the old, dull paring knife I replaced, which didn’t slice through food as fast as these).
I’m tickled at the concept of a “tomato knife” and it does come in handy for super ripe nectarines and plums as well. The spreader is handy for school lunch sandwiches and breakfast muffins. I actually have not used a small utility knife in some time, preferring to use either a paring size or my chef knife, but I learned quickly to appreciate the utility knife in this set for cutting melons and apples and prepping potatoes.
I had the option shortly after I brought them home to return them for a different paring and utility set, and opted to keep them.

RUST!!!!! Really?!?!
I received this set as a gift for Christmas. I use some of them, don’t really use others… I take care of them as per the instructions that came with them. I mean, they are knives so it’s not rocket science, right???
Well, they are all rusting! The knives and the scissors. This is not a cheap set of knives and the blades are all rusting. I can’t believe my eyes and it’s embarrassing because when I have my mother over, she wonders why I’m not using them… Thinks her money went to waste but I don’t want to embarrass her further by making her think she bought an inferior product. In the process now of trying to get a replacement to a completely different set because an entire set cannot be simply defective and must be poorly made. Wish I could get a refund and buy a completely different brand.
I’d give it zero stars if that were an option. Don’t waste your money.
Not too bad
This is an ok knife set. The block that comes with it is cheaply made. The slots for the steak knives are too close together so the handles (which are a tacky rubber) rub against one another, so you may accidentally pull out two knives when only trying to take one out. The bread knife is too serrated to the point where you destroy bread as opposed to cutting through it. They seem to hold an edge farily well for the price, and I like the size of the french knife. I’ve come to the realization that a knife set like this is really unnecessary for me personally. I’d rather buy the knives I need. This was a 10th Anniversary gift for work, so I’m glad I have it and thank work for it. It should last awhile if I keep them sharp (and safe).

“Meeting” is a set of kitchen knives: paring knife, carving knife, chef’s knife, filleting knife and their block. They all seem to be sculpted out of one piece of steel. The proportions are determined by the Fibonacci sequence with as its base the average width of a hand. Beautiful and clever.
Cleaning your knife correctly, protects your investment. I use my paring knife and my chef’s knife almost every day. I’d estimate that I’ve used my paring knife at least 7,000 times and my chef’s knife around 4,000 times. Because I clean them properly and hone them before almost every use, they still cut as well as they did when I purchased them almost 20 years ago.
Here are a few simple tips I’ve learned from caring for my knives:
I always wash my good kitchen knives by hand. I never put them into the dishwasher. Banging around against other items in the dishwasher can dull the knife and could tear up the dish washer rack over time.
Always keep the knife out of the water until you’re ready to wash it. If getting cut by a knife is no fun; getting cut by a dirty knife in dirty dishwater is a thousand times worse and you can get a nasty cut feeling around in the sink for a knife. Wash the knife by hand very carefully with soap and water and a sponge. Keep the knife blade pointed away from you.
If you need to soak it for a few minutes because there is something stuck on the blade, fill a pot with water and put the knife in the pot. Make sure the knife handle is clearly visible.
Let the knife air dry or carefully dry it with a towel with the blade facing away from the towel and you.
Never put a wet or dirty knife back into a knife block. The knife may start to rust and if food or dirt gets into the knife block, it can be very difficult to remove.
If you follow these simple steps, a good kitchen knife should last for decades.
