All About Magnetic Knife Racks

Kitchen utensils require maintenance and upkeep, just like any other tool.  Sets of kitchen knives, especially high-quality stainless steel weaves, can be some of the most demanding pieces of kitchen equipment due to the need for sharpening and cleaning.  A quality set of knives may cost anywhere from one hundred to one thousand dollars, and customers who are willing to fit the price tag into their budget need to know the best way of caring for their knives.  One of the most popular accessories available to purchase with a set of knives are magnetic knife racks for storage and convenience.

Magnetic knife racks are upright, vertical wall stands.  They use magnetism strong enough to withstand gravity and most minor contact to keep kitchen knives from dropping to the floor.  A basic unit can hold four most standard types of kitchen knives — a butcher’s knife, a bread knife, a vegetable knife, and a fruit or potato peeler.  Obviously, some households may have many more knife types, especially households with large budgets or penchants for cooking.

As there are around two dozen standard cooking knives, a customer can find a knife rack magnetic fit as large or as small as is needed.  The most complex ones are used in restaurants and may have enough space for a hundred utility knives.  Most are simply screwed onto walls, but some are actually magnetized strongly enough to be attached without any tools onto metal-bearing walls.

Knife racks are relatively cheap and can be purchased in nearly any hardware or household goods store, as well as directly from the producer via internet or outlet stores.  A stainless steel knife rack from Sears, for example, can hold twenty knives and costs only thirty dollars.  Imported racks, on the other hand, may retail for as high as three hundred dollars and feature gift boxing, drip grooves, and intricate designed wood coverings.

The advantage to these is the simplicity of use; rather than dig through drawers or carefully looking through piles of knives, customers can simply take whichever knife they need at a glance.  While some knives are susceptible to rusting or gathering dust in drawers, they keep the tools suspended and away from musty conditions.  In addition, friction between the knife and a knife holder will dull blades over time, while there is no direct contact between a magnetic holder and the actual knife blade.
