The Benefits of Letting Your Children Help in the Kitchen
Cooking with children are not only fun and rewarding, it is educational for children and can help ‘faddy’ eaters to try more food. Cooking also seems to be a skill that is not taught in school anymore, and many young people leave home without knowing basic cooking skills. Teach children are cooking from an early age and your children will appreciate it in future.
Children’s cooking can be dangerous and can lead to arguments and stress if not properly planned and supervised well. Here are some top tips for children’s cooking and baking:-
A. Choose a recipe together and make sure it is nice and simple. Search the Web for basic children’s cooking and baking recipes.
2. Read through the recipe together and find out what ingredients and utensils you will need.
Three. Clear the work area or desk and get out all the ingredients, utensils and things like weights and mixers.
4. Wash hands in warm water with soap before you start, and teach children about hygiene.
5. Run some warm water and soap in a washing up bowl so that you and your children can throw the used tools in it to soak.
6. Weigh out each ingredient and set aside ready to use the correct time.
A. Supervision of children when chopping or cutting foods.
2. Use sharp knives and proper knife task.
Three. Use a cutting board to protect surfaces.
4. Show the children how to cut your fingers tucked away, or use a fork to keep the food in peace while cutting.
5. Wash sharp knives immediately or put in the dishwasher. Do not throw sharp knives into the washing up bowl, you or your children forget they are there and cut your fingers while washing up.
A. Has kitchen rules – such as no running in the kitchen, wipe up spills immediately and dry the floor, always wash hands before cooking etc.
2. Set the pans on the back of the hob and if you need to use the front rings, make sure that pan handles do not stick out.
Three. Do not let children put things in the oven or take them out. Let your children see you as you carry the oven gloves.
4. Keep your hands dry and not use electrical equipment or outlets with wet hands.
5. Be careful when you cook food with children because hot oil can spit.
6. Teach children not to get too close or touching the hob rings, even when they are off.
7. Keep a fire blanket, fire extinguisher and first aid kit in kitchen.
8. Teach children the importance of using their own or clean chopping boards for raw meat and other foods.
9. Teach children to wash hands after handling raw meat.
There are some basic cooking skills that are important to teach children, for use in the future, as well as hygiene and safety rules. Here are some skills to incorporate into your children’s cooking and baking sessions:-
A. Pasta do – make different kinds of pastries with children and likes to make pies, turn left, blind baking pastry cases and making jam tarts etc.
2. The rubbing-in method – Teach children to use the rubbing-in method of cake making, baking and crumbles.
Three. Creaming – Make cakes and show them how to cream the butter and sugar until pale.
4. Folding – Folding flour in a cake mixture in a figure eight motion is important to keep the air in the mixture, shows children how to do it.
5. Whipping and beat – Show the children how to use a hand whisk and an electric whisk to cream and cake mixes.
6. Chopping and dicing – Show children how to chop an onion in different ways – slicing or chopping finely, and show them how to dice vegetables.
7. Peeling – Teach your children how to use a peeler for peeling potatoes, carrots and fruit.
8. Shake – Let the kids grate cheese and use a fine grater to tear lemon rind.
9. Moss – Let the children mashing boiled potatoes with margarine, milk and a masher.
10. Clip – Let the children squeeze the juice from the oranges and lemons.
11. Knead – Make bread with your kids and have fun kneading dough.
12. Rolling Out – Roll out the dough, or cookie dough with a rolling pin and use cookie cutters to create fun shaped cookies.
13. Lubrication and feeding – Show them how fat and line cake tins with grease and greaseproof paper.
14. How to use tools and equipment – Let the children use the scales, beaters, screens, knives, blenders and food processors supervision.
15. Have fun – The important thing is that children’s cooking and baking fun, and cook and bake a variety of foods and dishes.
